TUNNEL

Heaven and Hell

Just behind the Silver Waters Caravan Park at Beechworth are two tunnels called Heaven and Hell. They were cut through the granite hillside to allow water to flow through the hill to be used in the mining of gold. Currently you may walk through the top tunnel, Heaven, but you will need a good torch.

Diversion Tunnel

At the Woolshed Falls , there is a unique walk that commences at the bottom of the carpark and starts heading back to Beechworth. About 300 metres along the walk you look down a cliff and can see a Diversion Tunnel the gold miners dug through the granite to divert the stream away from their gold diggings.

Rocky Mountain Tunnel

At Beechworth the miners in 1856 dug a tunnel from Lake Sambel all the way under Beechworth and out into the Gorge. It took two and a half years to build. This tunnel was built to drain all the sludge away from the gold mine at the Lake, and deposit it in the Reedy Creek in the Gorge. Currently the tunnel is used simply as a drain, and the entrance can be seen at the Chinese Gardens, near Lake Sambel. The exit can be seen about 400 metres from the exit of the Gorge Road.
