Wangaratta Bike Paths

 

Wangaratta Bicycle Paths

Whether you are a local or a tourist, Wangaratta has some excellent bicycle paths for you to try. If you peddle a bike to  keep fit, or just enjoy exploring the scenery, then these bicycle paths will keep you amused for hours.

There are 6 paths listed below.

Apex Park to Bowser 5 Km one way
Bowser to Tarrawingee Station 14 Km one way
Apex Park to Horseshoe Lagoon 2 Km one way
Apex Park to Northern Beaches  3 Km one way
Tourist Info. Centre to Yarrunga    3 Km one way
Tourist Info. to West End Bike Path 3.5 Km one way

 

 

 

Apex Park to Horseshoe Lagoon.

 

This Ride is from Apex Park, which situated on the left as you head north from Wangaratta's CBD and cross over the Ovens River.

Apex Park is on the corner of Clements St. and the Old Hume Highway.

Ride Distance: 3.6 or 6 km

Roads: Mostly unsealed

Bike:        Road, cross, mountain

 

Ride Features:

This is a flat easy ride on very quiet unsealed roads. It leads to Horseshoe Lagoon, a reserve on the Ovens River, which makes an ideal picnic spot. Please beware of snakes in the long grass.

OO km Apex Park has an excellent playground, toilets and barbecues.

Turn right at the end of Clement Street. (opposite end to the old highway)

0.1 km Turn left into Bank Street. There is a sign directing you to Horseshoe Lagoon Reserve.

I.2 km Pass under the railway bridge. Ignore the road on your right shortly after this bridge, and continue straight ahead.

You will come to a shut gate.

Pass through this gate, making sure that you shut it after you.

1.8 km Horseshoe Lagoon Reserve.

To return, you can either retrace the outward route or take the following option:

2.1 km Turn left onto the good unsealed road.

3.0 km Turn right into Burrows Road at the T-intersection.

4.2 km Turn right at the intersection into the old Hume Highway, taking care to use the excellent lane on the shoulder of the road.

6.0 km You will have returned to Apex Park

 

 

Apex Park to Northern Beaches

 

This Ride is from Apex Park, which situated on the left as you head north from Wangaratta's CBD and cross over the Ovens River.

Apex Park is on the corner of Clements St. and the Old Hume Highway.

( The ride is on the other side of the Ovens River, as  the Northern Beaches are opposite Horseshoe Lagoon ).

Distance: 6.3 km

Road: Bitumen and dirt

Bike: Any suitable bike for rider

Ride Features:

River views sandy beaches at the return point and swimming (not recommended for small children).

0.0 km Apex Park. Toilets, playground, barbecue and picnic spot.

In Clements Street, ride away from the highway and turn left into Bickerton Street. Cross the footbridge over the Ovens River, and turn right into Templeton Street at the roundabout. Left into Mackay Street at the railway line, then take underpass on the right under the railway line.

1.3 km   Right into Grey Street

1.6 km   Enter the bike path at the Showgrounds entrance at corner of Grey and Evans Streets.

2.7  km    Can detour here to beach area.

 

Above is an information sign post at Northern Beaches, pointing you in the direction of Platypus Beach, The Nature Walk Loop and Kingfisher Beach. Above right is the Ovens River at Northern Beaches.

 

Above left is the bike path running alongside the Ovens River looking from Northern Beaches towards Wangaratta. Above right is the bike path about 500 metres closer to Wangaratta.

To return, you can either retrace the outward route or take the following option:

3.0 km Enter College Street

3.2 km Left into Park Lane

4.0 km Left into Edward Street.

4.5 km Continue ahead and retrace outward journey

6.5 km Apex Park.
