Birds

The Wagga Wagga Zoo located in the Botanical Gardens has one of the greatest collection of birds outside a capital city zoo.

Free Flight Aviary

A stunning feature of the zoo is the Free Flight Aviary, a very large enclosure covered with netting which allows the birds to fly freely as people walk through the enclosure on the clearly defined paths and wooden walkways.

Some of the walkways are elevated so that you may see the tree tops and the birds in flight.

Above you can see the part of the Free Flight Enclosure, with the walking paths, the thick trees and the netting keeping the birds in.

In the picture above, there are 6 parrots in the tree. There are three at the number 3, and one at the other numbers. It is common for up to 10 birds to swoop past you as you walk through the enclosure.

Throughout the enclosure there are sections set aside for feeding, and notice boards indicate by pictures which birds are most likely to be feeding in that area.

In the picture above you can see a green parrot sitting on the fence, ( 1 ) and a picture listing ( 2 ), of birds most likely to be feeding at the clearing ( 3 ), which has a food dispenser.

One of the most magnificent birds at the Wagga Zoo is the Satin Bower Bird. In the photo above you can see a glimpse of him, but the photo does not do him justice. His coat is a shiny blue satin colour, and he is about the size and shape of a crow. But his shiny satin colour makes him a standout bird in the enclosure. Satin Bower Birds collect blue objects, and take them to their nests.

When in the enclosure, keep your eye out for this bird, although it does appear to be camera shy.
