The Botanic Gardens are located within the Willans Hill Reserve, set on 20 hectares of what was an old gravel rock mine.

In the 1950's to minimise run off the council planted 10,000 trees, mainly eucalyptus, acacia and casuarina with some exotic pines.

Preliminary planning of the Botanic Gardens began in 1961, and the work was supervised by Tom Wood, after whom the main drive is named.

There are many features of these extensive gardens, and it is no wonder why they are now an award winning tourist attraction.
