Fishing

We have been a trout fishing destination for over 20 years in the heart of one of Australia's blue ribbon trout locales.  Not surprising when you discover that the immediate region has 180 km of mountain fed rivers and streams, a major tail water and numerous lakes and pondages...and all in idyllic location.  The Upper Murray river is 500 metres away and offers an excellent location for doing your own thing or hiring a guide.  Most guided canoe trips are on the Murray or Swampy Plans rivers.  Beautiful meadow and alpine streams are also nearby for those preferring walk and wade fishing.

Ron has 30 years trout fishing experience with fly and lure in Australia and North America.  Lessons and equipment are available to suit anyone from an absolute beginner to the very experienced angler.  Trout are from 500 g to 2.5 kg (6 lb) with a few larger monsters taken on occasions. Browns predominate but some nice Rainbows can be taken at times.

We specialise in both wet and dry fly fishing and lure fishing.  Guided fishing tours include a safe canoe float trip along with lunch. Some premium locations are easily reached by a short drive and walk.  The fishing season is from the first weekend in October to the first weekend in June.

MotorCycling/Cycling

Snowy Mountain Holidays is a unique base camp destination for a bike riding vacation.  We cater to smaller groups for riding in NE Victoria/SE New South Wales.  Because of our proximity to the Snowy Mountains and the Upper Murray River area, there is great versatility for either short rides or day trips.  The roads are an excellent ride, winding around rivers or through hills and mountains with little traffic to distract you. We offer undercover safe parking.  We can provide meals or shop in Corryong (12k away) and do your own cooking in your cottage.

Float down the Upper Murray River by canoe.  What better way to explore the area and river?  Drift lazily in the dappled light.  Plenty of time to throw in a line, swim or capture the moment on film.  Also a great way to view the bird life.  Our guided canoe tours include all safety equipment and a delicious lunch.
No experience is necessary.  Each trip is between 15-24 km long. Limit 8 people.

Walking

Snowy Mountain Holidays is located near 3 national parks: Kosciuszko National Park. Alpine National Park and Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park.  Between the three, there is plenty of bushwalking available.  Kosciuszko National Park is of special interest as it contains: the highest mountains and most extensive alpine snowfields in Australia;  the headwaters of our greatest river system, the Murray River;  and many unique forms of animal and plant life.  The winter snow, the summer wildflowers and the grand vistas of Mt. Kosciuszko are unequalled in the land.
Mt. Kosciuszko is the highest mountain in Australia (2228m) and both national and international travellers enjoy walking to the top of Australia.  In order to protect the unique flora of the park, a walking track has been built making it an easy going walk.  Above the timberline, it is a 14k walk (round trip) from the tip of the chair lift at the ski area of thredbo, NSW.  We are 1 1/2 hr drive from Thredbo.
Snowy Mountain Holidays offers organised day walks to Mt. Kosciuszko supplying transport and lunch.

Bird Watching

Australia's native birds are of great interest to both the novice and expert bird watcher.  Snowy Mountain Holidays enjoys a number of native bird species which frequent our gardens.  Many are here all year long, many are migratory and frequent seasonally.  Some of the more interesting species are the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Kookaburras, many types of honey eaters, Superb Fairy Wrens and many more.  When spending time on or by the river you are able to see a variety of different species of birds who frequent the river and surrounding lowlands.  In the air there are often hawks, ibis, kites, pelicans, the Nankeen Kestrel and occasionally a Wedge-tailed Eagle.  You will always be entertained by Crimson Rosellas, Galahs and Sulphur Crested White Cockatoos.

Pets

Snowy Mountain Holidays offers an excellent location to holiday with your pet.  We are located on a dead-end road, surrounded by pastureland and well away from any main road, which provides a safe location for your pet.  There are quiet roads to walks along and the river is always a favourite.

Clean dogs are allowed in the cottages by arrangement.  Dogs are not allowed on any furniture.  Dogs are welcome to enjoy the property, but must be cleaned up after.

Rose, our 11 year old Blue Heeler cross has retired from catching rabbits and playing with other dogs.  She spends most of her time discreetly accepting handouts at the frequent BBQs and rolling over for a tummy rub.  She loves children and playing with them on the lawn and around the fruit trees.  One of our satified guests poses on the bench overlooking the river and onto the Snowy Mountains (below right).
