Page 2

Located on the Great Alpine Road, the Old Tobacco Sheds are on the left about 500 metres before you enter Bright when coming from Porepunkah.

This Tourist complex has free entry, although there is a small charge for the museum, and comprises a host of tourist type attractions, such as gift shops, cafe, antiques, bric a brac, books and paintings, and a host of other collectables.

You may find that you need a few days to saunter through all the shops.

Tobacco Museum

The Tobacco Museum is full of information on Tobacco Growing, and has many displays of tobacco products, including the historic log tobacco kiln attached.

Above is one of the displays of tobacco related products, in this case Tobacco Tins and Cigar Boxes.

Above is a display of cigarette lighters, matches and pipes.

The Tobacco Museum has a wealth of information on the Tobacco Industry, and displays this in Charts placed around the walls.

These Charts cover the topics listed below :-

                        History of Tobacco

                        Tobacco in Australia

                        Seeds

                        Planting

                        Growing

                        Diseases

                        Harvesting

                        Tying

                        Curing

                        Grading

                        Manufacturing of Cigarettes

                        Kilns in the Area

Above is a photo of the Chart showing tobacco harvesting. These include close ups of the unusual machinery which has been especially designed for tobacco farming.

The above chart shows the various stages in cigarette manufacturing.

Above is a proto type of the modern tobacco machinery. This machine was pulled by a horse, and two humans sat on the seats between the wheels, about 4 centimetres from the ground. They could push holes in the dirt with their hands and plant the tobacco seeds, cover them with dirt and give them a quick squirt of water from the drum on the machine.

If you look closely at the tobacco machines on the charts in the museum, you will see that they incorporate these close to ground seats in their modern styles.

An historic log tobacco kiln is part of the museum. To see a photo of a similar Historic Log Kiln which is located at Myrtleford press this link  Tobacco Kiln at Rotary Park ( Myrtleford )
