BACKUP FIRST!!!

Experiences WORLDWIDE over the past few weeks indicates the following:

  • Windows 98 "up-grade" WILL overwrite the 95 registry. ANY software applications package that writes to the registry may need to be RE-INSTALLED.
  • Windows 98 Dial Up Networking has serious problems and Australia-wide only a small number of experienced operators have been able to get it working again without a COMPLETE re-installation of modem, modem software, dial-up networking software and re-configuring of dial up networking and all associated program components, modem device drivers and special settings.
  • Expect Windows 98 to crash frequently in the first few days or weeks. BACKUP DATA FIRST!!!
  • You CANNOT de-install Windows 98 - reports from individuals in the states indicates the de-install option doesn't work. If you want to "go back" to 95 you'll probably need to re-format your hard disk and re-install it.

Conclusions:

  1. Don't do it.
  2. If you have Win95B with Fat32 installed and working, then '98 doesn't offer any real improvement.
  3. IF you feel you HAVE to try it - make a COMPLETE BACK UP FIRST; have ALL your original software CD's or floppies handy for re-installation; make CAREFUL NOTES of ALL your network settings - this includes dial up networking if you are using it - so you can re-configure them (ALI reserves the right to charge for assistance in re-configuring a previously operational configuration)
  4. If you had to pay for your 98 "up-grade", then you paid too much.
  5. Have your original ALI issue floppies and instructions handy to re-install our base software if you can't get your software to work with your 98 "up-grade". Trumpet as issued may not support your 32bit apps, but at least IT WORKS!!!
  6. Don't do it. If you feel your current 95 or Win 3.11 is not performing as you would like, consider skipping straight to NT4, and give 98 a BIG MISS. Rumor has it that the price of NT as an operating system is set to double in the next two years, as Microsoft phase out the Windows OS (95, 98) completely.
