Porepunkah Rail Trail

From Porepunkah to Myrtleford

Come and cycle the Mountains to the Murray Rail Trail, from the Snowgums to the Rivergums ( when completed ).

The Porepunkah Rail Trail currently consists of approximately 94 Km of bitumen sealed path that is built over the disused railway line from Bright to Wangaratta.

The Trail from Wangaratta to Wahgunyah   ( on the Murray near Corowa ) has not been completed yet.

A Branch line from Everton to Beechworth is also open, a distance of approximately16Km.

The Porepunkah Rail Trail follows a gentle gradient that makes it suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. There are three toilet blocks built on the bicycle path, one at Eurobin, one at Everton Station, and the other at Tarrawingee Station. There are however public toilets in all the towns mentioned along the Trail.

The distances between the towns are as follows

* Note Everton is approximately 3 km South of Everton Station.

The Porepunkah to Myrtleford Section of the Rail Trail

Distance 23 kms.

The Official Start/ Finish to the Rail Trail/ bike path from Bright to Porepunkah, or from Myrtleford to Porepunkah is just below the main street and the shopping centre, in the beautiful Porepunkah Picnic Reserve on the banks of the Ovens River, pictured above.

Upon leaving the Porepunkah Reserve, the bike path /trail goes underneath the main Ovens Highway, pictured above left, and then runs along the left hand side or the western side of the highway for a few kilometres, before crossing the highway. The photo above right shows the bike path at the Porepunkah signpost, looking towards Porepunkah, with the bike path on the eastern side of the road.

The Porepunkah Rail Trail passes this explanatory sign which informs persons that the Rail Trail stage one is 94 Kilometres long from Bright to Wangaratta and cost $1,700,000. Not far from here the trail passes Boyntons Winery, photo above right.
